“We exist to conquer the most common birth defect.” That is the mission statement of the organization Conquering CHD, which held their 2024 Heart Connection conference in Washington, D.C. earlier this week. Johns Hopkins Medicine providers and families, alongside other physicians, researchers, and key members of the CHD community, came together to learn, engage, and partake in legislative advocacy visits to Capitol Hill. Twenty three states were represented and eighty meetings were held to educate Congress about CHD and advocate for full funding of the Congenital Heart Futures Reauthorization Act of 2024. Thank you, Hopkins friends, for fostering a united front for change. Learn more at ConqueringCHD.org ❤️ #ConqueringCHD #CHDAwareness #HopkinsHearts

Yesterday I experienced one of the greatest honors of my career as the student-invited 16th Annual Alpha Omega Alpha Visiting Professor during the Bicentennial Celebration of the The George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences. What an incredibly inspiring group of soon to be minted physicians (this weekend!). I feel wonderful about the future of medicine because THESE are the visionaries who will determine its future. I hope my words will resonate as you take on this next thrilling phase of your journey- all the best & congratulations!

Yesterday, the Children's Center joined the Johns Hopkins Hospital and the Wilmer Eye Institute, Johns Hopkins Medicine in honoring our trauma survivors and their victories. Pediatric trauma survivor, Aaliya, reunited with members of her trauma care team and shared her experience with those in attendance. Thank you for sharing your story, Aaliya. The journey to recovery is never an easy one and deserves to be celebrated 👏 #TraumaSurvivorsDay #ChildrensHealth

Blount’s disease affects the growth plates around the knee, causing a child’s leg to bow outward. The exact cause of Blount’s disease is unknown. But studies show that the condition’s severity is related to obesity, and the disease most commonly occurs among Black adolescents. In a study published in the Journal of Pediatric Orthopaedics, Children’s Center researchers examined how race-associated socioeconomic disparities and high body mass index impacted the severity of a child’s condition. Last month, 31 Children’s Center patients attended Camp All Stars ⭐ First started in 2003, Camp All Stars is a two-day overnight camp specifically designed for children and young adults who have chronic kidney disease, are on dialysis, or have had kidney transplants. The purpose? To just let kids be kids 🏕️ “It’s about coming together...and not thinking about their disease,” says Shirl Wood, Camp Director. One camper said, “The best thing about Camp All Stars is being able to talk about medical stuff and not feel weird." ❤️ #ForTheKids #ChildrensHealth
