A brand new study published by our esteemed scientists, Dr. Pallavi Upadhyay and Dr. Vijay Singh, titled "Mycoplasma pneumoniae Outbreak in 2023: Post-pandemic Resurgence of an Atypical Bacterial Pathogen“. This is first detailed report in the United States that shows an unprecedented spike in the detection of Mycoplasma pneumoniae in the outpatient population during 2023. The COVID-19 pandemic negatively impacted the frequency and infection patterns of many respiratory pathogens including Mycoplasma pneumoniae, an atypical bacterial pathogen and major cause of community-acquired pneumonia. “Beginning in 2023 there were reports of “walking pneumonia” or M. pneumoniae outbreaks across Asia and Europe. Our paper is the first detailed survey report in the US that shows a sharp increase in the detection of M. pneumoniae within the outpatient population in 2023”, says Dr. Upadhyay. Our published study provides a detailed look into the temporal, geographic and demographic distribution of the latest outbreak. We also analyzed the ICD-10 codes associated with the M. pneumoniae outbreak.
