For the Besas, nursing isn't just a job — it's a purpose, and one that they share. Rocel and Bernardo and their children, Jasper and Jannelle, are all nurses, fueled by compassion, deepening their family bond and supporting each other through it all.
When Rocel was in high school, her mom collapsed in front of her and was rushed to the intensive care unit. Her feelings of powerlessness led to her decision: She would become a nurse, so that she could take care of her family and advocate for their care.
Rocel was at nursing school in her native Philippines when she met Bernardo, completing the same degree. He'd spent his childhood admiring those who wore medical white coats, and wanted to fulfill his dream of caring for others.
College sweethearts ever since, Rocel and Bernardo married and moved to the United States. Because of the time it took to process paperwork, they both restarted their careers at Riverview Medical Center — in a new language, culture and climate, with new specialties and equipment.
Their determination carried them through all the obstacles, and within three months, they had saved enough to get an apartment and car, and to bring their two young children to join them.
More than twenty years later, they remain members of the Hackensack Meridian family. Bernardo is a nurse in the Riverview emergency department, while Rocel went on to serve as manager of clinical education before joining Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where she is now director of nursing quality and professional practice.
The dedication and care displayed by Rocel and Bernardo inspired their children — as did Rocel's successful fight against cancer. Jasper and Jannelle are both nurses today, and credit their parents with fostering their deep appreciation for nursing and patient care.
For Rocel and Bernardo, it's their proudest achievement. “I am very proud that both Jasper and Jannelle decided to be nurses. I am fully aware that working as a nurse involves long shifts and can be physically and emotionally taxing, but it is also a profession that is so fulfilling, touching people’s lives in their most vulnerable time,” Rocel says.
Bernardo adds, “I enjoy and look forward to our conversations about each other’s day at work, the challenges and experiences, and especially the ‘firsts’ for our children, such as their first successful foley cath insertion and first code.”
While Rocel and Bernardo were the first in their family to become nurses, they paved the way for their children, nieces and nephews, who practice around the world.
For decades, every day in the Besa family has begun with the promise of helping others. Rocel, Bernardo, Jasper and Jannelle share the same dedication to compassion and care, a family bound by their love for nursing and the profound impact they make on the lives of those they care for. #NursesWeek
