Grief is a natural response to loss, flooding the brain with stress hormones and reshaping thoughts and feelings. It's okay to feel foggy or emotional; it's part of the brain's adaptation process.

The SUDC Foundation is dedicated to increasing the awareness of sudden unexpected deaths in childhood, and funding crucial research to better understand and prevent these tragedies. We are the only organization worldwide devoted solely to the needs of families and professionals touched by unexpected/unexplained deaths of children. SUDC is the sudden, unexpected death of a child twelve months and older, which remains unexplained after a thorough case investigation is conducted and other possible causes have been ruled out. It is considered a category of death, not a diagnosis. Although the occurrences are rare, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reported, in 2015, that 393 children were lost due to deaths that were sudden and unexplained. Of those deaths, 216 were children aged one to four. Since its inception in 2014, the SUDC Foundation has funded crucial research, helped hundreds of families, and led many advocacy efforts, including the successful passage of the Sudden Unexpected Death Data Enhancement and Awareness Act, which was signed into law by President Obama in December 2014.

Join Partners Against Epilepsy Mortality (PAME) at their next webinar on May 13! Seizures & Sudden Death in Children – New evidence and important directions for research and prevention Register: https://lnkd.in/gDuDsabz Leading NYU researchers, Laura Gould and Orrin Devinsky, will discuss their new research linking seizures, including febrile, to early childhood deaths. Sudden Unexplained Death in Childhood (SUDC) is the unexpected death of a child on or after their first birthday that is unexplained following a comprehensive investigation. More than half of these deaths occur in toddlers aged 1-4 years of age and about 1/3 are associated with a past medical history of febrile seizures. Almost all SUDC deaths are sleep-related and unwitnessed so the NYU team sought to better understand possible mechanisms of death by reviewing videos of some children during their last sleep period. Importantly, they found that some children passed away after having a convulsion in sleep. Justin Fell and Katie Czajkowski-Fell will share their story of their son Hayden and their experience in research enrollment with NYU's SUDC Registry and Research Collaborative. Pediatric epilepsy specialist Dr. Elizabeth Donner will moderate the webinar as the panelists describe their study and its implications for future research and clinical care, such as post-infancy sleep guidelines.
As we continue to spotlight our volunteers during National Volunteer month, we'd like to shine a light on Kristen Dillon, PsyD, ABPP, a clinical Geropsychologist and loving mother to Junie (4/2/2020-12/30/2022). Volunteering has become more than just a way to give back for Kristen – it's been a profound source of healing and empowerment. After the loss of Junie, Kristen founded Junie’s Place in honor of Junie and hopes to offer complimentary bereavement services to those grappling with the loss of a child, infant, or the pain of stillbirth or miscarriage. Kristen recently presented a workshop entitled: "Navigating the Path of Grief" to an audience of psychologists from across the country serving in long term care settings. This workshop described various experiences of grief and how grievers work to integrate their grief and loss into their lives through rituals and support. Through her selfless dedication, she not only honors Junie's memory but also empowers individuals to find solace and strength in adversity and loss. Let us recognize individuals like Kristen, whose commitment not only touches lives but also serves as a reminder of the boundless resilience of the human spirit. Join us in making a difference! Volunteering is not about what you have, but what you give – your time, your energy, your heart. Whether you're a student, a professional, or someone with a passion for helping others, you can make an impact with the SUDC Foundation. We're grateful to the FoxCrest Community in Rockaway, New Jersey for their incredible support in assembling our Awareness Kits! If you're interested in volunteering or learning more about our cause, email: info@sudc.org. Dr. Krywanczyk will guide audience members through a typical death investigation, from the initial scene to the final determination of cause and manner of death. This presentation will include discussions on the different types of ancillary tests which are often added to a traditional autopsy and will specifically examine why deaths in childhood are so complicated. Alison Krywanczyk, MD is a Board-Certified Forensic Pathologist and Deputy Medical Examiner at the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office. Dr. Krywanczyk grew up in Vermont and received her BA in biology from the University of Vermont (UVM) and her medical degree from the UVM College of Medicine.
