P3D184: Current Utilization Practices and Attitudes Towards Clinical Event Debriefing in Pediatrics: a Needs Assessment

Purpose/Objectives: Clinical event debriefing (CED) can be a powerful patient safety tool to identify team and individual performance weaknesses, strengths and opportunities for patient care improvement. Current attitudes and utilization of CED by pediatricians and pediatric quality improvement leaders have not been formally studied. The objective of this project was to discern attitudes and the utilization of CEDs by general pediatricians, pediatric subspecialists, and pediatric quality improvement leaders to identify challenges and opportunities to improve the use of CEDs to optimize patient care and safety.

Design/Methods: Two versions of a 12-question survey, one for general and subspecialist pediatricians providing patient care and the other for quality improvement leaders, were developed by an expert panel (a 13-member multidisciplinary AAP Section on Simulation and Innovative Learning Methods task force on CED). Survey question topics include the use of and characteristics of CED in different clinical settings, training on debriefing, and potential barriers to the implementation of a CED program. The surveys were iteratively reviewed and revised to ensure focus on the important elements of implementation of CED. Survey questions include multiple choice and free text responses. The surveys will be distributed to the AAP Section on Simulation and Innovative Learning Methods listserv with an email reminder after one month and closing of the survey in month three. Descriptive statistics will be used for data analysis. This project will be submitted for IRB approval.

Results: The surveys will collect some demographic data including primary employment setting and years in clinic practice. The surveys also inquire about clinical event debriefing experience and program establishment. Data collection from the surveys will be collated by time of presentation.

Conclusion/Discussion: Understanding the attitudes and current utilization practices of CED in pediatrics can assist patient safety groups in the integration of this tool in clinical practice and in quality improvement performance plans. Building a framework for performing and evaluating clinical event debriefing in pediatrics will be integral in assessing the impact and establishing benchmarks and standards for pediatric CED.
