As a state-designated acute care children’s hospital, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital offers a full-range of pediatric specialized healthcare services for newborns and children through young adulthood. The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s operates one of the largest, most advanced neonatal intensive care units in the country as part of New Jersey’s first state-designated Regional Perinatal Center, renowned throughout New Jersey for the exceptional level of high-risk maternity and neonatal care provided.

The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s cares for 8,000 inpatients and more than 45,000 outpatients annually. Being centrally located and providing a full range of pediatric medical and surgical specialties, The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s serves as a pediatric regional transport hub for hospitals throughout the state. As a state-designated acute care children's hospital, Saint Peter’s offers a full range of specialized pediatric healthcare services, including one of the most sophisticated maternity programs, delivering more than 5,400 newborns in 2022. The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s works closely with Pediatricians and Family Practitioners in the community, supported by 237 General Pediatricians and Pediatric Specialists.

The Dorothy B. Hersh Pediatric Emergency Department, one of the largest pediatric emergency departments in New Jersey is a 5,200-square-foot state-of-the-art facility. Saint Peter’s provides pediatric emergency care to 22,000 patients annually. The Dorothy B. Hersh Pediatric Emergency Department is the only pediatric emergency department in New Jersey to have earned the prestigious Lantern Award from the national Emergency Nurses Association in 2022.

Saint Peter’s University Hospital has provided comprehensive clinical genetic services since 1992. The Department has seen more than 34,000 individual patients. Patients are referred for evaluation, diagnosis, management, treatment, counseling, and emotional support for more than 2,000 different conditions. Saint Peter’s houses one of the largest comprehensive Lysosomal Disease Therapy Centers in the United States, trials orphan drugs, and provides a broad range of pre-conceptional, prenatal, and postnatal genetic counseling; pregnancy-specific management; and treatment of maternal metabolic, lysosomal, and genetic conditions.

The Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division is at the forefront of treatment and research in cancer and blood disorders while providing follow-up care for survivors up to the age of 30. Because it has full-member status in the National Cancer Institute’s (NCI) Children’s Oncology Group, the Pediatric Hematology/Oncology Division is a clinical test site for the NCI's Children's Oncology Group clinical trials. 

The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s is the only children’s hospital in central New Jersey selected to partner with ProCure Proton Therapy Center – the only proton center in the New York area – to provide proton therapy for children with tumors in areas such as the eye, brain, and thyroid. Children come from around the country and the world for proton therapy treatment and The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s provides medical care and observation for these patients while receiving treatment.

Saint Peter’s Children Hospital also operates one of the few pediatric vascular clinics in the country for the treatment of vascular abnormalities such as hemangiomas. At the Pediatric Multidisciplinary Vascular Clinic children are treated by a team of doctors including a plastic surgeon. Conditions evaluated and treated include arteri-venous malformations (AVMs) and hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia.

The Pediatric Endocrinology Division at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital offers a full range of services for the care and treatment of the endocrine system and diabetes. As a state-designated Regional Center for Inherited Endocrine Disorders, our staff provides testing, treatment, and education relating to congenital hypothyroidism and congenital adrenal hyperplasia (CAH). The Diabetes Self-Management Education Program, recognized by the American Diabetes Association since 1993, provides a comprehensive program for children and adults with diabetes, promoting the concept of self-care through education about the disease and the teaching of skills necessary for diabetes self-care. 

The General Pediatrics Division offers a full array of pediatric services for children. With more than 22,000 physician and nurse visits annually, the Division is also a leader in the New Jersey State Vaccine for Children (VFC) program and provides over 26,000 immunizations to children each year.

The Level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital is part of New Jersey’s first state-designated Regional Perinatal Center. Saint Peter’s NICU is licensed for 54 bassinets and provides the most comprehensive neonatal care in the state for newborn and infants with medical or surgical problems. The NICU has been honored with a gold-level Beacon Award for Excellence by the American Association of Critical-Care Nurses (AACN). Critically ill infants and children throughout central New Jersey and neighboring counties have prompt access to our specialized NICU services via our Mobile Intensive Care Transport Unit. 

The Pediatric Neurology Division utilizes sophisticated diagnostic techniques, including video-encephalography (EEG) monitoring, to help evaluate children with seizure disorders, epileptic and non-epileptic seizures. The Division is a referral program for area neurologists for the treatment of intractable seizures. Saint Peter’s Epilepsy Center is home to full-time, specially trained staff provides the most complete range of evaluative and surgical treatments for children and adults with epilepsy. Our team is comprised of adult and pediatric epileptologists (neurologists who specialize in epilepsy), neurosurgeons, neuropsychologists, interventional radiologists, nurse practitioners, educational counselors, social workers, and electroencephalogram (EEG) technologists.

Pediatric orthopedic surgeons at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s specialize in treating orthopedic injuries and conditions through adolescence. Saint Peter’s University Hospital is the first and only hospital in the state of New Jersey to offer the low-dose, full-body EOS® Imaging System for pediatric patients. At Saint Peter’s, orthopedic surgeons have pioneered anterior scoliosis correction surgery.

SURGERY
Few hospitals in the area offer the wide array of neonatal and pediatric surgical services provided at The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter's University Hospital. The Children's Hospital at Saint Peter's provides comprehensive general and specialized surgical care to treat congenital and acquired conditions affecting children from birth through young adulthood. Our specially trained staff is experienced in treating common pediatric ailments, such as appendicitis and hernias, as well as rare or complex conditions such as Complex Congenital and Neonatal Surgery, Minimally Invasive and Open Thoracic Surgery, Pediatric Oncologic Surgery, Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Surgery, Endocrine Surgery for disease of the thyroid and adrenal glands.

The Craniofacial and Neurosurgical Center at The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s University Hospital was founded in 1959 to provide much-needed medical knowledge, surgical expertise, technology, and compassionate support to families who have children with clefting or other craniofacial differences. The staff of the Center is recognized as a "Cross-Specialty Team," one of the highest recognitions designated by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA). Our program is recognized by the American Cleft Palate-Craniofacial Association (ACPA) as a regional center providing all of the services necessary for the treatment of children. Families come to the Center from throughout New Jersey and Pennsylvania. Many of our specialists also serve as Operation Smile volunteers, traveling throughout the world to perform reconstructive surgery for underprivileged people. 

The Pediatric Faculty Group of The Children’s Hospital at Saint Peter’s sees patients at the Pediatric Health Center at Saint Peter’s Family Health Center in New Brunswick, New Jersey. The Pediatric Health Center provides primary care to a highly vulnerable patient population. The programs at the Family Health Center help to ensure care inequity and screen for social determinants of health. 

The Dorothy B. Hersh Regional Child Protection Center evaluates, treats, and prevents physical and emotional injuries caused by physical and sexual abuse, including medical neglect. Saint Peter's is one of only four state-designated centers for the treatment and prevention of child abuse. A state-designated child protection center, Saint Peter's Dorothy B. Hersh Regional Child Protection Center (CPC) serves eight counties in central New Jersey. 

PARTIAL HOSPITALIZATION/For KEEPS PROGRAM (Kids Embraced and Empowered through Psychological Services) For KEEPS is a short-term acute partial-hospitalization state-of-the-art unit licensed by the New Jersey Department of Health and Senior Services. Established in 2002, the For KEEPS program has been lauded as a model for children’s partial hospital programs statewide. The healthcare professionals at For KEEPS strive to offer high-quality mental health diagnoses and intensive treatment to children who suffer from emotional and behavioral difficulties that impede their ability to function successfully in a social environment.
