Drowning is a leading cause of accidental death in the United States and across the world. In the US, the CDC reports that an average of 4000 to 4500 fatal drownings occur each year. Drowning is the single leading cause of death for children 1-4, is second leading cause of injury death for children 5-14, and remains in the top 5 causes up to age 55. It has been reported by several studies that for every 1 fatal child drowning an estimated 7-8 children are seen in emergency departments for submersion injuries. The National Drowning Prevention Alliance, comprised of its partners, supporters, and sponsors believe that drowning is preventable and that we can prevent the tragedy of drowning. We offer free resources for pediatricians including videos, posters, infographics, and more.
