Dr Shaikh is a general pediatrician with special interests in well newborn care, breastfeeding, and in quality improvement and patient safety. As medical director of Duke's academic newborn nursery, she is well placed to marry these interests for the benefit of infants and families. Quality improvement projects that she leads or is involved with include improving hepatitis B vaccination rates, standardizing hyperbilirubinemia treatment across providers, and improving infant safe sleep practices in the nursery. Dr Shaikh also serve as faculty mentor for residents interested in patient safety, and co-leads the Pediatric Resident Safety Council. This has led to numerous projects that have improved the safety of many aspects of patient care at her institution.
Dr Shaikh has a strong interest in breastfeeding medicine and became certified as an IBCLC in 2019. She has several ongoing projects related to breastfeeding in both the newborn nursery and in the outpatient general pediatrician’s clinic, and have published on the influence of lactation consultants in exclusive breastfeeding rates in the newborn nursery. She is the pediatrician physician lead for her institution’s efforts to become certified as a Baby Friendly hospital. Additionally, Dr Shaikh co-chairs Duke's Safe Sleep Committee.
