Penicillin drug allergy is reported by 20% of patients, but confirmed in less than 5 percent. Subsequent avoidance of penicillin and cephalosporins in patients results in increased cost, less efficacy and increased complications. Delabeling such patients with procedures that are safe to perform in the office will result in improved antibiotic stewardship.
