P3C136: Gender Makeup of Pediatric Residency Program Directors

Background: Diversity, equity, and inclusion are important in academia, healthcare, and society in general. Representative leadership inspires success in trainees[1]. Pediatric program directors (PDs) not only ensure programs comply with ACGME standards but are critical in shaping their programs and supporting trainees[2]. This project’s goal is to describe the gender makeup of pediatric PDs.

Methods: Binary construct of gender using the PD’s name and pronouns from publicly available data, including program websites, ACGME (01.22.2023), AAMC, AMCAS, and AACOMAS resources. Chi-square or proportions tests were used as appropriate.

Results: 213 programs were analyzed.

Conclusion: Female representation of PDs is not different from the general pediatrician or pediatric trainee population, and there is gender equivalency in the distribution of leadership length and program. However, although the vast majority of PDs in every ‘position duration’ or ‘program size’ tranche are female, there is a paucity of female Deans and Pediatric Chairs. Further data will be needed to understand whether the PD role is part of the professional path to further leadership roles. If so, additional data will be needed to provide insight into factors limiting female professional trajectory. If not part of that professional trajectory, understanding why PDs are predominantly female will be worth investigating.

This study was limited by the availability of self-reported data, the methodology of gender characterization, and the use of a binary gender construct. Additional data must be made available to fully understand the status and progress of DEI in pediatrics. This would include characteristics of gender, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic upbringing, and more. These characteristics must be considered independently and intersectionally.
